Tower Bridge Re-opens Months Ahead of Schedule
Download traffic Advisory for February 13, 2008
The City of Sacramento Department of Transportation re-opened the Tower Bridge in December 2007 for the public to enjoy new wider sidewalks five months earlier than expected. The bridge work began in January 2007 and was expected to be complete in May 2008. Rather than require an additional closure, the project finished months ahead of schedule.
Pedestrians and bicyclists are now traversing sidewalks which were widened from 3 feet to nearly 10 feet. This will provide easier access to the Sacramento River waterfront and between the cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento.
The historic and prominent Tower Bridge has framed the gateway to Sacramento since 1935. A celebration commemorating completion of the bridge is scheduled for Spring 2008. The pedestrian and bikeway improvements are a joint project between the cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento on the bridge owned by CalTrans.
Plans are Underway for a Spring Event to Celebrate an Improved Tower Bridge.
