Frequently Asked Questions
- How long will construction take?
- Construction is slated to take approximately 18 months to complete - January 2007 through May 2008.
- Can I still get to River Cats games?
Yes! In order to successfully and safely complete this project, intermittent lane and sidewalk closures, along with two periods of complete bridge closure, will be necessary. However, in cooperation with Caltrans and the City of West Sacramento, the City of Sacramento has arranged these closures around the River Cats’ season. The first complete bridge closure will be after baseball season, from September 2007 through November 2007. The second complete closure will occur after the holiday season, from January 2008 through April 2008.
- Why are the existing sidewalks being widened?
- The historic Tower Bridge is the critical link between two bustling and ever-growing downtowns – Sacramento and West Sacramento. With a number of upcoming projects on both sides of the river, widening the sidewalks will allow for even more connectivity and a safer environment for pedestrians and bicyclists.

- How will I be kept informed about construction activities?
- The City of Sacramento Department of Transportation has planned to keep commuters and community members updated in a number of ways:
- Construction Information Line
- Call (916) 492-6454 for up-to-date project information highlighting construction impacts. Access to the resident engineer is available at all times through the information line.
- Traffic Alerts to Media
- As construction updates become available, traffic alerts detailing the change in construction, and its impact to the public, will be submitted to the media for distribution.
- Web Page
- The “Traffic Updates” section of this Web page will serve as an up-to-date information resource for anticipated impacts.
- Corridor Signage
- Construction signage will be posted on both the Sacramento and West Sacramento ends of the Tower Bridge in order to inform pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists of upcoming construction activities.
- How much will the new bridge cost?
- The total cost for the improvements, including design and construction is estimated at $12 million. The Cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento are splitting a portion of the costs, with the remainder coming from state and federal sources.
- Who is responsible for making this project happen?
- The City of Sacramento is the lead agency for this project, with essential support from the City of West Sacramento and Caltrans.
