Tower Bridge Tribute and Toast to Tomorrow Celebrates
Improved Pedestrian Access and Future of the Waterfront
|
|
Walkers, runners, bicyclists and riders, are invited to join Sacramento River Cats players and mascot
Dinger in crossing the Tower Bridge at the “Tower Bridge Tribute and Toast to Tomorrow” event. The
Cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento, will host a joint event, to be held Saturday, April 12, from
1-2 p.m., celebrating early completion of the Tower Bridge Pedestrian/Bikeway Improvements Project.
During the event, the public will have the opportunity to fully explore the Tower Bridge improvements
while the bridge is closed to automobile traffic. Motorists should note that the bridge will be closed from
Noon - 2:30 p.m. for set-up and clean-up after the event.
The Tower Bridge serves as a critical access point into both
downtown Sacramento to the bustling
businesses and entertainment venues; and West Sacramento with access to Raley Field for baseball
games, summer concerts and special events. The improved pedestrian access provides enhanced
connectivity and safety for recreation along the waterfront in Old Sacramento and River Walk Park. The
new and improved bridge also serves as the backdrop for the exciting riverfront development of
tomorrow.
Opened in 1935, the Tower Bridge has served as a historic gateway joining the two communities. In
2007, the sidewalks were widened from 3 feet to almost 10 feet. The construction of this project coincides
with new business and housing developments planned along the waterfronts. The Tower Bridge
Pedestrian/Bikeway Improvements project was a joint project between the cities of Sacramento and West
Sacramento in partnership with the bridge owner, Caltrans.
Also Join:
Mayor Heather Fargo, Sacramento
Mayor Christopher Cabaldon, West Sacramento
